Raffia or stretched tapes are thermoplastic semi-finished products that possess high tensile strength. They have versatile applications: sealing, strapping, tying, construction, transport operations, and more. Industries prefer raffia tapes due to their easy availability and cheaper packaging solutions.
Process chillers play a significant role in manufacturing raffia tapes to fulfil sudden cooling requirements and maintain the accurate parameters.
A cooling system ensures efficiency during the quenching stage of the production.
Chillers help control the tension essential for producing raffia tapes with good winding.
Let’s take a brief look at the process to understand why high-grade chillers are important for producing raffia tapes.
Raffia tapes can be manufactured using a blown, cast, or water quenched film process. Then, they are cut into strips, followed by heating with hot air or a hot plate, leading to stretching into the final tape size. The stretched tapes are wound on reels before annealing and winding.
The entire process involves rapid cooling with a water cooled chiller, which improves the performance of film during the stretching operation, rending it good physical properties. A specific temperature is essential for giving the tape its stretch and texture. Rapid cooling with the right quench temperature produces raffia tapes with strong orientation. The tape is given optimum strength and elongation by supplying quench water temperature of 30-40 oC.
Process cooling systems in the raffia tape manufacturing promote:
- Maintenance of accurate temperature and pressure conditions
- Retain desired physical properties
- Specific tensile strength needed for durability and to prevent leakage
